Camel Group has recently entered a European automaker’s pre-development project for 12V sodium-ion batteries, based on its experience in developing and engineering multiple sodium-ion battery models. The project will focus on further technical development and validation.
Following the mass supply of its 12V lithium-ion batteries to major European automakers, the project represents another step in Camel Group’s development of next-generation low-voltage auxiliary battery technologies and international R&D collaboration.
As vehicle electrification, intelligence and platform-based architectures continue to evolve, low-voltage batteries are receiving greater attention from automakers as part of the development and evaluation of next-generation vehicle platforms. In Europe, requirements related to low-temperature performance, battery regulations and decarbonization are also raising expectations for low-voltage batteries in areas such as safety, resource availability and lifecycle carbon footprint.
With abundant raw material resources, strong low-temperature performance, high safety and the potential for a more diversified supply chain, sodium-ion batteries are emerging as one of the next-generation low-voltage auxiliary battery technologies being evaluated by automakers worldwide.
With more than 40 years of experience in the low-voltage battery sector, Camel Group has developed a multi-technology product portfolio covering lead-acid SLI, EFB and AGM batteries, as well as lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries. In sodium-ion batteries, Camel Group has completed the development of prototype products and is continuing to strengthen its R&D, validation and engineering capabilities. Earlier, an IEC international standard project for “12 V Sodium-ion Batteries for Automotive Start-Stop Applications,” proposed by Camel Group as the lead proposer, was unanimously approved by IEC/TC 21 and officially launched.
The latest project further reflects the growing interest of overseas automakers in Camel Group’s sodium-ion battery R&D and application capabilities. As vehicle electrification and intelligence advance, different vehicle platforms and applications require low-voltage batteries with varying performance, safety, cost, low-temperature and supply-chain characteristics. Lead-acid, lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries each have their own strengths, providing automakers with a broader range of technology options.
Camel Group will continue to develop lead-acid, lithium-ion and sodium-ion technologies in parallel and deepen R&D cooperation with automakers worldwide. Leveraging its capabilities in product development, engineering, manufacturing and global customer support, the company will provide low-voltage energy solutions tailored to different vehicle platforms and applications, while expanding its role from a low-voltage battery supplier toward a comprehensive low-voltage energy solutions provider.
